30 Hour Famine Results

Judy’s friends thought it was weird, but she was super excited about forgoing food for over a day! Our youth group participated in World Vision’s 30 Hour Famine fundraiser by seeking donations from friends and family and then eating nothing for a period of 30 continuous hours to experience a mere taste of life in world’s poorer regions. Our teens and leaders raised a total of $1542.77. We celebrated the work with a meal together and an all night sleepover at the church.

It’s time for gym night once again! We will meet at the church at 7:00pm and head to a gymnasium for an evening of fun and games. Afterwards, we will head to McDonald’s for some post-game snacks. Cost is $2, plus some additional money for food afterwards.

Youth: 30 Hour Famine Lock-in, Mar 9-10

This year, our youth group will be participating in the world’s biggest youth fundraiser, powered by World Vision. Funds raised will go towards feeding hungry children and to help families overcome poverty and injustice. The famine will begin on March 8 at 1:00pm, as each participant will stop eating. We will meet at the church at 6:30pm on March 9, 2012 to countdown the final minutes of our famine and, at 7:00pm, we will feast together! We will continue to fellowship together with a church lock-in until 9:00am the next morning.

Everyone who would like to learn about believer’s baptism, or is interested in being baptised is invited to attend an information class on Saturday, February 4. The class will begin at 10:00 a.m. in the church library, and will last 1-2 hours. Refreshments will be provided. Please note that believer’s baptism is a prerequisite for church membership.

It’s almost the end of the year! The youth group will celebrate the end of a fantastic 2011 with a church lock-in. We will meet at the church at 9pm, and stay until 9am the next morning. Our group will look back at the events of the past year, and have an evening filled with games, worship and fellowship. Cost is $5 and covers snacks and breakfast in the morning.

This Oct. 31, OBC will be hosting Family Fun Night from 7:00 – 8:00pm. It will be a collaboration event between the Youth and the Young Adults for children and their families. On Oct. 28, we will be making preparations for the event. Come, ready to draw, colour, cut, and design.

Youth Bowling Night: Sept 23 @ 7pm

It’s time for another bowling event, yay! We will be meeting at the church at 7:00 PM, and heading over to the bowling alley together. Please be on time, as we have lanes reserved for us, but only for a certain period of time. Cost will be $12 per person. This will cover your shoe rentals as well as two games.

New Sunday School Format

Beginning today, Sunday school has moved into a new year and we’re making some changes! Many students have graduated to the next age group and we’re expanding our scope.

Preschool and Kindergarten
Grades 1-3
Grades 4-6
Grades 7-10
Grade 11 to Young Adult

All the children grade 6 and below start together to sing songs and pray to start off the class, then they separate into their age groups. All the students grade 7 and above do the same.

We celebrate those who are graduating to and from the youth group with our annual grad banquet. All students who are heading into Grade 7 this year, or who graduated from Grade 12 in June will be honored in this special evening. All youth who are not graduating should arrive at the church at 1pm to help with preparations. At 6pm, we will all enjoy a family-style meal together, and acknowledge the great achievements of our graduating students. Cost is $5 for non-graduating youth; and free for our honorees.

Parents’ Meeting for Students Entering Grades 6, 7, 8

Sunday, July 3 at 1:00pm, the Sunday school teachers and youth leaders will be holding an information meeting for parents of children entering grade 6, 7, and 8 in September. We will be talking about the youth retreat and youth events, which new grade 7s (and up) are invited to, and some temporary changes to the age groupings of Sunday school that will be in effect over the Summer.

Walking in the Light

The previous lesson made a distinction between your position in Christ and your daily condition. Your position is where you stand with respect to Jesus. When you are saved, you are in Christ and you now exist in an unchanging unity with Him. Your daily condition depends on how you live day-to-day.

Here, I’ll introduce another pair of words that serve a similar purpose:

Your Relationship with God
Your Fellowship with God

Think about your family. If you break some kind of household rule and your parents get angry, you do not cease to be their son or daughter. Your relationship remains intact. On the other hand, your fellowship or closeness with them becomes less than harmonious.

So, how does that break in fellowship with your family usually get solved? Let’s take a look at 1 John 1:5-9. The author has created a parallelism in the text in order to help us understand the connection between his use of imagery and his theology.

Exploring the Passage

The passage begins by saying that “God is light, and in him there is no darkness at all.” The author then compares light with confession and darkness with lies. I’ve laid out verses 6-9 in a table to help show how the phrases link to each other:

while we walk in darkness,
we lie and do not practice the truth.	we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light,	If we confess our sins,
we have fellowship with one another,
and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.	he is faithful and just to forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Verses 6 and 8 state that all people have sinned. If you think you haven’t, you’re mistaken. To sin is like walking in darkness.

Verses 7 and 9 state that if you confess your sins, God will forgive and cleanse you. This is like coming out of the shadows and into light so that your faults and weaknesses can be seen.

After talking about the eternal stability of your relationship with God, we can’t help but notice the author’s use of the word “forgive” as a result of confession. Must we confess our sins verbally every time we sin to keep our salvation? No. First, the author is speaking of fellowship, not salvation. As Christians, when we confess, we are simply restoring fellowship with God and not salvation. Second, the entire book of 1 John is intended to assure its readers of their salvation despite the fact that they sin. As a Christian, God has already forgiven your sin past, present, and future.

So what should I take home from this?

Here’s a quick guide that you can use for the rest of your life. As soon as you realize that you have sinned:

Thank God that he has already forgiven you.
Confess your sins to God in prayer (and to others if necessary to restore fellowship with them).
Seek to turn from your sin for the future. This requires that you trust God to aid you in doing this. You cannot save yourself from eternal punishment. Neither can you grow and change without God’s help.
