Summer Day Camp 2012 二零一二暑期日營

We would like to invite you to our free annual Summer Day Camp. This year, we will learn some of the most important promises God has made to us. Children will be actively engaged as they participate in Bible stories, make fun crafts, and get their daily dose of physical activity.

Aug 07 – 11 (with a BBQ Event on Aug 12)

Children entering Kindergarten – Grade 6 in September 2012

Registration is required by June 02. Register early because space is limited! You can register online, but for returning children, just send hannalee [at] oakridgebaptistchurch [dot] ca an email to reserve your child’s spot.

Good Friday Service, April 6, 10:30 am at OBC. Join with the Vancouver Fellowship churches for this special worship and Communion service. Our special guest speaker will be Dr. Colin van der Kuur, Director of Church Planting for Fellowship Pacific.

30 Hour Famine Results

Judy’s friends thought it was weird, but she was super excited about forgoing food for over a day! Our youth group participated in World Vision’s 30 Hour Famine fundraiser by seeking donations from friends and family and then eating nothing for a period of 30 continuous hours to experience a mere taste of life in world’s poorer regions. Our teens and leaders raised a total of $1542.77. We celebrated the work with a meal together and an all night sleepover at the church.

Youth Gym Night: April 13

It’s time for gym night once again! We will meet at the church at 7:00pm and head to a gymnasium for an evening of fun and games. Afterwards, we will head to McDonald’s for some post-game snacks. Cost is $2, plus some additional money for food afterwards.

Youth: 30 Hour Famine Lock-in, Mar 9-10

This year, our youth group will be participating in the world’s biggest youth fundraiser, powered by World Vision. Funds raised will go towards feeding hungry children and to help families overcome poverty and injustice. The famine will begin on March 8 at 1:00pm, as each participant will stop eating. We will meet at the church at 6:30pm on March 9, 2012 to countdown the final minutes of our famine and, at 7:00pm, we will feast together! We will continue to fellowship together with a church lock-in until 9:00am the next morning.

New Series on Revelation

Pastor Brad will take us through the book of Revelation beginning February 12. Join us at 9:30 or catch it on the web. What is the book of Revelation about? The first few words of the book say:

The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants the things that must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John…

In short, the apostle John received a vision from Jesus in the 1st century AD largely about future events. Some of these events would take place in the near future (and hence have already taken place for us in the 21st century) and some in the distant future that have yet to take place.

Like all prophecy, the purpose of the book is not merely to show us what will happen in the future, but to show us how we ought to live in the present. The opening paragraph continues:

Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near.

Everyone who would like to learn about believer’s baptism, or is interested in being baptised is invited to attend an information class on Saturday, February 4. The class will begin at 10:00 a.m. in the church library, and will last 1-2 hours. Refreshments will be provided. Please note that believer’s baptism is a prerequisite for church membership.

It’s almost the end of the year! The youth group will celebrate the end of a fantastic 2011 with a church lock-in. We will meet at the church at 9pm, and stay until 9am the next morning. Our group will look back at the events of the past year, and have an evening filled with games, worship and fellowship. Cost is $5 and covers snacks and breakfast in the morning.

Joint Service, Luncheon, Town Hall: Oct 30十月三十日：主日聯合崇拜、聚餐、討論會

We will hold a multilingual (English and Chinese) service on Oct 30 beginning at 10:30. Pastor Brad will speak on the merits of shifting to an elder-led model of church governance and speak to some of the common questions and objections to such a change. It will be followed by a potluck luncheon and a final town hall discussion on the topic of moving to an elder-led model.

十月三十日兩文三語 (中/英文、英語及國/粵語) 的崇拜由上午十時半開始。高思禮牧師的講題為轉變為長老帶領教會之管理模式的優點，常見的問題並作此改變之目的。崇拜之後是聚餐，然後是就長老帶領之教會領導架構話題的最後一次討論會。
